The Caribou is more commonly known as a reindeer and inhabits Northern Canada. During the winter season, their hooves are small with a sharp rim to prevent the Caribou from slipping on the ice. During the summer season, the tundra becomes wet and soft and the hooves of the Caribou will expand and turn spongy to provide better traction. Its large nostrils allow incoming cold air to heat up before entering the lungs. The undercoat is dense and woolly and is covered by an overcoat with longer hollow hairs filled with insolated air. These hairs also helps the animal float when swimming large lakes and powerful rivers.
Caribou's are migratory animals that can travel up to 4,800 kms (approximately 3,000 miles) each year. They eat many types of plants, moss and even small animals which is digested in their four chambered stomach. When running, the Caribou can reach a speed of nearly 80 km/h (50 mph).
