The Woodchuck or groundhog is the largest member of the squirrel family and weighs around 13 pounds (6 kg). Seen throughout Canada they prefer to live in open grassy areas. Growing up to 24 inches (61 cm) in length, they are usually seen on the ground, however they can also climb trees and swim.
These mammals voraciosly feed on grass, plants and fruits during the summer / fall seasons, building body fat reserves for the winter season. While hibernating during the winter the animal's heart rate and temperature drops dramatically. On February 2nd every year Americans celebrate Groundhog Day, which dictates that if the animal sees its shadow this day, there will be 6 more weeks of winter.
